Go for either CinCom or Squeak... I'd personally not bias myself with this discussion.<br /><br />Anyway for e.g., take a look at VM model, Smalltalk which was written some ~13 odd years before Java already had VM model,  it already had OO and dynamic runtime reflection (the ability to infer information about Classes themselves)... lot more.
